Community Transcription – Fifty-Two Months

August was the fifty-second month since we opened the War Department archives to community transcription, and we continue to receive regular requests for transcriber accounts. Here is a snapshot of transcription activity for the month:

Fifteen new transcribers signed up last month, and as of August 31, the total number of transcribers was 2,285. These new transcribers included an affiliate of the Navy Museum in Madrid, university students, members of historical societies, and genealogists.

The individuals who signed up to transcribe in August mentioned an interest in topics such as Native American studies, shipbuilding, the Whiskey Rebellion, and Fort McNair.

Transcribed documents include an appeal for rations; information on the death of the Chief of Shawnees, Red Pole; an affidavit regarding a stolen horse; and an assurance to the troops stationed on the frontier that they will receive military support. Special thanks to user Leo for transcribing a large number of documents.

Our community of transcribers have added 202 edits to War Department documents, with the total number of saves being 15,335. Overall, we have had 266,211 page views.
