War Department 18 .^th Apl 1798 His Excellency John Jay } Sir I have ^ ^been honoured with your Excellency's two Letters dated the 7 .^th of April Ins .^t Captain John Barry Commander of the Frigate United States has been directed to proceed to New York to examine the Cannon which you have been pleased to Signify you were ready to lend to the United States, upon an Assurance from the President , that others of the like dimensions to shall be returned;

Should the Cannon be approved by Cap .^t Barry I shall transmit you the Assurance required by the Resolution of your Legislators. In the mean while I beg that you may give such exa- mination of them as he may think necessary to as- certain their Effections [undecipherable] fitness for the Service.
