Pittsburg January 25. 1796
Sir
I have to acknowledge the Receipt of your letter of the 5th instant and I have also to acknowledge
that I have hitherto neglected to transmit Major Bezeleel Howe's Receipt for your packets said to contain fourteen thousand four hundred thirty six dollars intended for pay of the army at Head Quarters [undeciphrable] the Receipt is however now enclosed & by the date of which you will see that these packets were not one moment unnecessarily detained at this post, but the Receipt has been inadvertently delayed. You will now however please have it placed to my credit.
As safe opportunities of transmitting cash to LeBeeuf and Presqu'isle are not frequent I a few days ago transmitted by one of my assistants money to pay the Troops at those posts up to the end of the last year.
I am Sir Your very obedient Humble Servant
William Simmons Esq Acct War Depart. Isaac Craig Philadelphia D Q U [undecipherable]
