Leaving the apparent balance (without any deduction for errors, overpayments or improper charges, in the hands of the QuMr Genl for which he has to produce accts & vouchers                     284529

The result of the considerations of the  Secretary has or prob[]
will be transmitted to you.  It is nevertheless my duty, again to urge your forwarding to this office without delay, the accounts of the disposal of the public money in your hands, in order that an early examination & investigation may be effected, and unless this is satisfactorily done, it will become my duty to lay before the Comptroller of the Treasury, the communications proper on the subject & in conformity to his instructions to me of the 30 January 1799.

I have only to add that a warrant has been issued by the Secretary of War on the 12 Instated in favor of James Miller {?} you attorney on account of the Quarter Master Department for Firfteen thousand dollars for which sum you are accountable.

I have duly received your letter of the 8 ins  inclosing the affidavit of John Winchester, in order that he may receive the amount which is due to his late Brother, It will be necessary that he empower some person, to whom it can be paid.
