Collo Francis Mentges Agent of Fortifications

Accountant's Office April 22d 1800

Sir

On the 17th instant you were informed by Letter that the Accounts rendered by you against the Fortifications at Mud Island, for expenditures made up to the 7th instant had been adjusted that a balance of Three Thousand four hundred seventy one dollars ninety one cents remained in your hands due the United States --

The Secretary of War has this day issued a Warr. in your favor for Five thousand Dollars as an advance on accts of the said Fortifications; but being informed of the settlement of your Accts up to the 7th instant, & of the balance then remaining in your hands, he has directed that you be immediately called upon for your further expenditures. You are therefore requested to render your accounts accordingly

On a settlement this day of the accounts of John Wilkins Junr & James Miller, for purchases and expenditures made by them during the first four months of Year 1800, by the special direction of the Secretary of War, they have received a credit on the Books of this Office for articles purchased by them, & as will more fully appear pr abstract A & B -- For the armoury at Harpers Ferry in Virginia as pr abst A D. 1597.24 For the armoury at Springfield in Massachusetts do 80.-- For the Ordnance Department do 102.59 For Quarter Master Department do 816.67 For Hospital Department do 170.67
