P. S. Colonel Pickering ask’d a day or two before I left Pha whether I wd be willing to put my name to the acct given respecting the Spaniards wishing to excite the Indians to hostilities with the U.S. I told him that Wm Knox had given him such a wrighting with my name to it, & that must be somewere amongst his papers – but I recollect since that it was copied by Knox & that my name was [illegible]. The original, I left with you, which I beg you'd mentioned to the Secry, with my approbation to make use of it as he may think proper. – N. H.
