the fixed period, for all who attain the age of eighteen years, in any part, or during the course of each year, to be enrolled in the advanced corps, and to take the necessary oaths, to perform personally such legal military service as may be directed, for the full and complete term of three years, to be estimated from the time of entrance into the said corps, and also to take an oath of allegiance to the state.

   The commanding officer, or general of the advanced legions of the district, shall regulate the manner of the service of the youth respectively, whether it shall be in the infantry, artillery, or cavalry; but after having entered into either of them, no change should be allowed.
   On his first entrance into the advanced legions, the young man shall be furnished with complete arms and accoutrements, for which he must be accountable during his service in the said legions. But having served with reputation the time prescribed, he should receive an honorary certificate thereof on parchment, signed by the legionary general, which, together with his arms and accoutrements, should be presented to him by the general in the name of the people of the state, as indispensable appurtenances of his character as a free citizen. No action of debt should deprive him of his arms, they ought to be unalienable. The names of the persons to whom certificates are annually given, to be registered in a book to be kept by the legionary general for that purpose.
   He shall also at his first entrance into the said advanced corps, receive the following articles of uniform clothing, for which he shall be held ac-
