Treasury Department Comptrollers Office January 6th 1791-- Joseph Howell Junior Esquire Commissioner of Army Accounts Philadelphia
Sir
It appears from the Books of the Treas=
=sury that the several sums of 15,000 dollars old emission and 1,550 dollars Specie, were advanced to Colonel James Wood of the Virginia Troops during the years 1781, 1782 & 1783.
As there is no evidence at the Treasury
of Colonel Woods having ever accounted for the expendi= =ture of those monies--I have to request that you will inform me whether all or any part of the above mentioned sums have been carried to the debit of the said Colonel Wood, upon a settlement of his accounts at the pay office.
I am respectfully Sir, Your Most Obedient Servant [illegible] Eveleigh Comptr.
[stamp] Investigation of the names on this record shows them as of 8 Reg't Virga. in the Pay case of Col. James Wood See [brace] General Index Military Cards.
