Sir In answer to your request for information relative to your claim as a Refugee from Canada, I have to state to you that congress has not yet acted upon the reports made by the Commissioners, but it is presumed that they will be taken up during the present Session.

Captn. Hugh McCall 35 12
War Department 31st December 1800
Sir In my Letter to you directing the manner in which Captain Nicoll should present his claim for Surgi cal Services to the Garrison of Fort St. Tammany & Point Peter I mentioned that he should render it as a private Citizen. In the accounts presented enclosed in your letter of the 15th Inst. Capt. Nicoll charges the pay & forage of a regular Surgeon's mate. On this it will be impossible for me to decide untill I am informed whether the number of men at those ports during the time Captain Nicoll of- ficiated, was sufficient to justify the expence of the attend ance of a regular Surgeons Mate. if you can procure authen tic returns of the numbers as above mentioned, I will with those additional documents, take the subject into Conside ration.
I am Sir &c
