Sir,
I had the Honor to write you on the 1st Inst. &
also last evening by Doctor Hammill, after whom I send this Letter express to advise you That I have a few minutes since rcd Information from Lt. Hartshorn, who I have been obliged to have in Command at Fort Hamilton--That the Enemy about two hours before sun set yesterday, had made three men prisoners from a covering party within 400 yards of the Garrison--That He immediate- ly detached a reconnoitering party of thirty men under Lieut. Gaines, who soon made such disco= veries of the Enemies force, as obliged Him to de= cline a pursuit, and that a few minutes after Mr. Gaines' return, the Enemy discharged twenty one Rifle shots--in different directions around the Gar= rison &c. within one mile of it--Why I have been obliged to leave Fort Hamilton under the Com- mand of a Subaltern, my letters to the Commander in Chief of which I transmitted you Copies, on the 1st Inst will fully explain--I will however resume the Command in person, Tomorrow, and in the mean time, as I calculate that Major Adair with the Kentucky volunteers, and the Convoy of pack Horses, will be on the March from Fort Jeffer- son Tomorrow I have dispatched Serjt. Bricks to be the [?] Memorandum (of which the enclosed is a Copy) to Lt.
