Richmond, June 29 1784 Sir

My deputy has informed me that Colo. Carrington

cannot give a sufficient certificate to found your pay upon for the year 1783-- that you are not returned in any arrangement, nor is there any account of your services for that year in the office

Colo. Carrington thinks that if you served in 1783 it will

be in your power to procure a certificate of the same from your com- manding officer, which will sufficiently establish your claim, he says he saw you in South Carolina in 1783, but that is all he recollects of your services or terms of absence--

I am Sir with regard and esteem Your obed. servt. Jno Pierce D [illegible]. Bazil Middleton
