note

This fragment--first page of an apparently longer memorandum--is in the hand of Josiah Fox.

created note

This undated memorandum seems to relate to construction of the frigate Chesapeake. The Chesapeake was authorized in 1794, but its keel was not laid until December 1798. It was launched in early December 1799. These facts and the content of the document suggest that the letter was written not long after the ships keel was laid, and certainly before April 1799. We have opted to date the letter in December 1798, although better evidence may suggest a slightly later date.
