annuity
goods for the Six Nations
powder & lead
constitute a part of their annuity
distributed the goods among the several nations
wished to see the advantages that would arise to the Oneidas
more trouble from those that have had education
returned to his indian habits and is very little respected by his own or the white people
produce the horse or horses if he would give a certan sum
American
through what channel the complaint has been entered is unknown to me
assert the Oneidas have expressed their satisfaction in their present blacksmith
have not heard a word of complaint which is a thing they are not backward to offer for the smallest failure
make immediate enquiry and report to you the true situation
suppose it would not be displeasing to the Quakers to introduce one of their own people in the place of the present blacksmith
Quakers reside at Oneida
your letter
appears complaint has been made against Wemple blacksmith for the Oneidas
procure one for that part of the Six Nations as his situation is remote from any settlement of white people and is truly a sacrifice of society and almost every part of living that is desirable
principal objection stated by the Secretary of State appears to be for his keeping a trading shop or selling liquor to the Indians which is a thing I have warned him against
told me he never did anything of the kind unless they extorted it of him
seldom had any in his house
