Title

A reply to Smith's letter; attack on the magazine at Frederick; escorts for artillery;

Description

Hamilton expresses satisfaction over the contents of Smith’s letter of September 16th, regarding an attack on the magazine at Frederick. 1,000 pairs of shoes have been ordered to Frederick, and more will follow. A previous letter mentioned the detachment of a lieutenant and 40 Continental soldiers to escort the artillery of the Virginia and Maryland militia. To that Hamilton adds a Colonel and dragoons. While their original orders were different, Hamilton gives Smith permission to detain these latter troops as part of his brigade.
