notable item/thing

sent you several letters since I have been in Europe
did not expect a reply
find it impossible to get out to America this year
various expectations about the part America will take in the present war
must remain quite neutral
sorry to hear that our Government are disposed to quibble
terms of the treaty respecting admission of prizes
astonished & mortifies to hear that the Courts of law have variously adopted the President's Proclamation as the law of the land
prosecuted certain individuals for entering on board French Privateers
rejoice to find that the jury retain such a sense of their own dignity as to give a verdict upon their consciences tho' directly against the opinion of the Court
long to hear that the Indian War is over & that you are our of that cursed office
French are the only ally in real friendship
they are a great people
very patriotic
they like our government our politics (at least what they think them to be) & our lives
the canal may be accomplished upon much less expense than in Europe
I have seen most of them of any importance & think we may have a great confidence in the success of ours
do not feel quite satisfied with it's passing thro' Milton, but doubtless the most weighty reasons will divert its course
I have ordered from England all the information extant on the subject & resume Genl Jackson has received them
respects to Mrs Knox, Mr & Mrs Breck & the young Folks of both families
not received an answer yet to letter I wrote him
Hotel de Philadelphia
passage des petits Peres
enclosed letter
send him the one addressed to the Doctr & tell him to open it.
