in my last
Indians had actually commenced hostilities on the people of the two southern counties
committed several murders
on the frontier of South Carolina
hostile intentions
most positive terms refused to return the property or deliver up the offenders
in addition to the disagreeable intelligence
daily received from some parts of the nation
their hunters have returned
contemplate striking our frontiers
the repeated efforts of the Union for preserving peace with the Creeks should prove ineffectual
war with them seems inevitable
McGillivray died persuaded that we should never have a permanent peace with the Creek nation until we had punished their insolence and made it their interest to drive our of the nation a disorderly set of white men who are everlastingly exciting the young warriors to do mischief
you will have employment for for your regulars in the north which will compel you to call forth the militia in the western counties of South Carolina and Georgia
necessity of you commander being an officer of rank and ability who has a talent for employing militia to an advantage in the field
whose good understanding will prevent
mischievous contention occasioned by the odious distinction which are often drawn between the soldiers and citizen and who also will pay the strictest attention to the principles of economy for a Militia are the most expensive soldiers that ever were employed
should some fortunate event prevent our engaging in a war with the Creeks
suppose you were to send a man of Integrity in the Character of an Agent to reside in the Neighbourhood of the most influential men in the nation and appoint the general that commanded your army the superintendent for Indian affairs
it would add security to the public prospect and put an end to the petty contentions between agent and trader
unprincipled men
frontier
character of traders
we may in vain hope for peace
endeavor to ascertain
real fact
conduct of the Indians and your Agent
repeated solicitation of those whose lives and property are in the greatest danger and a desire to furnish you with such information as comes within my reach induces me to be thus troublesome
communication
good of the public
relief
people of Georgia.
