Sir
I have understood that a man resides at Fort Pitt, who was
an excellent interpreter of the Shawanese Tongue – and perhaps also of
the Delaware. the name M. Hodgdon forgets, but says he serves as
a pilot to Boats going down the Ohio.
I pray you to enquire out this man, and if he
should be a master of the Shawanese and Delaware tongues or
either of them and otherwise a man of good character and faithful
to the United States – I request that you would send him to me,
provided he should be willing to be employed as Interpreter under
the Commissioners who are to hold the treaty with the hostile
Indians at Sandusky in the ensuing spring –
It will be necessary he should be in this City
early in April –
I am
Sir
Your humble Servant
KNOX
Major Isaac Craig
