Charles Croxall complaint about discrepancies in recruiting and credits given to Captain Eichelberger

William Charles Croxell noted that after seeing the accounts of Captain Barnett Eichelberger, he was surprised to find a credit in Eichelberger's account that should have been given to himself, Croxell. Croxell expressed surprise at the conduct of Captain Eichelberger, noting that the greater part of the company in Colonel Hartley's Regiment was his. In a separate letter, dated 16 March 1792, William Nichols attested that the greater part of Eichelberger's Company was recruited by Croxell.

In consequence of seeing sundry accts in your office respecting Capt. Barnet Eichelberger's Company in Colo Tho Hartley redgt. & finding a Credit in his acct of all the men and certain moneys standing charged against me, and no kind of Credit for any men, I express to you my surprised at such Conduct in Capt Eichelberger it being well known the greatest part of the Company was mine and to the Truth of this; I beg leave to refer you to Colo Harley and Majr Nicholl the means altho all my accts was taken near Brandwine with my Baggage yet I can will remember 52 of the Compy inlisted by me - I after his return'd by order of the Colo and recruited 27 men but I believe they were put into other Companies, at so distant a period
and having no papers to refer to, I cannot say exactly, but I am sure the money I recd was scarcely adequit to the Bounties, and to the best of my knowledge I had no settlement with Capt. Eichelberger, I recd money of Mr Hudson in Baltimore of which Capt Echelberger recd a part it being got in his name by me

NB I claim in my acct the expencis of the men in this company which I was first Lieut when I recd orders from his Excellency the Comr in Chief in Jersey to return & recruit for the redgt I believe the later permits me money but I recollect well I was bare of money in proportion to the men & Bounties with the unavoidable expenses recruiting a Business imposed on me, more than any office in the Redgt.
