Dear Sir___ No 27) Wheeling 30th August 1791
We arrived here at 3 o'Clock yesterday after an agreeable passage free from accidents or [indecipherable] --to day we shall have two Boats ready for horses, one [indecipherable] here since Friday last and the other purchased at Buffaloe, with these we shall proceed probably this evening or at farthest by to morrow morning--Capt Phelon went forward from hence this morning--the water is not so difficult as we expected--Swan went to Fishing Creek this morning--The horses got down very well, but Craig was not of the least use he was intoxicated allmost the whole way poor John complains loudly--I will thank you to find forward the enclosed letters by the Post, if they arrive in time--if not as from after as possible--Sutherland is here, I shall make a settlement with him to day and if possible take him on in charge of the horses to Muskingam
I have nothing more to add but my best respects to Mrs Craig, to General Nevil, and to the whole of both families--and to assure you that I am unalterably and sincerely your friend--
Samuel Hodgdon
Major Isaac Craig--
