No. 10
Philadelphia the 14 May 1791
Sir
By this Letter you will be informed that I have contracted with Colonel James Marshall now present, for the supply of fifty horses suitable for Cavalry--and that as they are purchased they are to be delivered to you at Pittsburg--you will therefore make such arrangements immediately for their accomodation as are Necessary--whether it may not be best to put them to pasture in the vicinity of Pittsburg from oeconomical consideration you can best judge being in the spot--or whether such support will keep them in heart to perform the duties expected from them forms the next consideration--At all events they must be well and safely kept--the expence
of
of which I will provide for when I come forward--Colonel Marshall is also to furnish us with forty boats at Red Stone to take the southern troops to Pittsburg--from whence they will be used as occasions require--besides these provisions I have authorised Mr. John Achison of Warrington to purchase twenty horses, and twenty boats under similar circumstances--which if produced to you will be received as in the case of Marshall
I will thank you to Note particularly the age, colour, and height of every horse you receive for I am determined to be in a situation to detect any imposition if any are offered--but from the characters of the persons employed, I expect to be well served--
As the business grows on your hands, you may expect a reasonable additional pay--of this I shall be a competent judge when I see you--
With sentiments of esteemI amSirYour Most Obedie[nt] [undecipherable torn]Samuel HodgdonQMG
Major Isaac Craig
