Dear Sir
Captain Sayles, having declined accepting the company to be raised in Rhode Island, I ask your recommendation in confidence of some person to fill his place who will do honor the same. A Captain Holden has been mentioned, but I do not know his character. A captain of the late war of excellent character would be preferred. Pray tell me the precise character of Lieutenant Sherman
Your brother having declined to Supply the company I beg you to recommend some person to fill his place. Major Franks, the inspector, has been sent on with money to be advanced to the contractor.
I have taken the liberty of ordering some clothing to your address, the expences of which will be paid by the person furnishing the supplies.
