War Department, the 26th February 1791
Sir
The President of the United States has this day referred to me, your Excellency's letter to him of the 17th instant, relative to your communications of the 4th of last month.
And in obedience to his orders, I have the honor, Sir, to inform you that your communications being considered as highly important to elucidate the present situation of the frontiers were therefore with other papers of the same nature, on the 20th of last month, laid by him before the two houses of Congress.
That measures calculated for the effectual protection of the frontiers, have been repeatedly under the deliberations of Congress, and it is expected will be concluded upon in a day or two.
That as soon as Congress shall
decide/
decide upon this important subject, the result shall be transmitted to your Excellency.
