Honoured Sir
Unwilling to [editor's note: undecipherable note underneath "to"] call your attention from the important duties of your station, and sensible that an occasion like the one upon which I solicit you, will produce many applications. I shall only observe, that independent of the natural biass of my mind to a military life, the misfortune of my family, which has been reduced by the War, from [undecipherable] to an unenviable situation! and my self to a mortifying dependency will I hope be accepted as a sufficient apology for troubling you with my wishes for an appointment. Should there be any additions made to the troops already in the service, and while I flatter myself that I shall be equally considered with the Officer of the second and third late Federal Regiments, I have the honor to assure you, that as heretofore my military conduct has been irreproachable. It shall in future be my study to acquit myself with reputation to those who may honour me with their patronage, and satisfaction to my country. Have the honor to be with [undecipherable]. Your humble servant
Samuel Newman
