Description

Knox asks that the subject be retained by Harmar as a profound secret. Asks that Harmar devise a plan for exploring the branch of the Mississippi called the Missouri River up to its source and all its southern branches. Knox sends a map to assist in endeavor. This cannot be done with the sanction of public authority. Suggests that Harmar organize a military expedition with some Indians. Leaves the matter of costs and equipment to the territorial Governor. Recommends bringing pocket compasses, pencils and papers; canoes would be most satisfactory means of undertaking journey.
