Sir
I have the unhappiness to inform your excellency and Congress that I have lately been siezed with an indisposition which in the opinion of my Physicians cannot be removed but by a recess from every kind of business for a few months. I am therefore beg to be indulged with leave of absence from my office for this necessary purpose, and that in the mean time I may be authorised to continue the assistant who I appointed in consequence of the resolve of April 11th 1787
