Dear Sir

Permit me to intrude upon your time for a moment and to claim an explanation of the affair to which the inclosed paper refers - Major Crogham alledges that there must be some mistake in your office as he positively denies having recieved the Cash mentioned in the inclosed reciept - In this situation I can only appeal to you for information - If the Major has recieved the money he does injustice, if not injustice is done him - in either case I am persuaded you will take pleasure to redress the injured party

I must therefore, as I am interested in the claim, beg the favor of you to transmit me as soon as may be, a transcript from your books formally & officially attested, fully explanatory of this transaction - I send this letter to Richmond & if it finds you there must beg you to commit your answer to

to the hands of the bearer John Fowler Eqsr - but should you have left that city, it will follow you to New York & in this case let me entreat you to be so obliging as to forward your answer thro the medium of our friend Col. Biddle - & greatly oblige your most obt sert &c &c
