Description
Impossibility to gather in all Indian chiefs--rather, he traveled the fatiguing journey to Kaskaskia. Describes geography and inhabitants, including Indians and chiefs with peace pipes, and French and American settlers. Describes settlements and buildings. Explains to settlers the proprietary of possessions on contested land. Visited with Spanish settlers. Advised settlers to rouse their militias and follow court decisions. Describes being surrounded by hostile Piaukonohou Indians and exchanging fire. The troops in their uniforms greatly impressed the Indians. Refers to murder of prisoners and to dancing and whiskey. Received commission as Brigadier General, and decided it was expedient to abandon posts in that country; discusses condensing troops, fortifications, militias. Reports great sickness. Outlines ordnance and ammunition. Warns of impostor Methodists. Encloses monthly returns. Provides intelligence regarding military lands.
