Title

Instructions to the Commissioners for negotiating with the tribes of Indians in the Southern Department.

Description

Congress reports to the commissioners of Indian Affairs that hostilities have commenced between the state of North Carolina and the Cherokee Nation, and the state of Georgia and the Creek Nation, with boundaries as the general source of contention. The commissioners are instructed to make peace without demanding the cession of any land from the Indians; the commissioners are also instructed to make assurances of protection and to treat the Indians' leaders kindly. Finally, the commissioners are instructed to see to it that the Indians report any rebellious activity to the superintendent of Indian Affairs, and to return any prisoners.
