Title

Response to Request for Widow's Benefits

Description

This is the author's response to a request for widow's benefits for James Wilson. He says that an examination of regimental rolls reveals that Wilson was mustered in on February 1, 1777 and deserted January 20, 1780. He apparently was not in the Army during 1780 so a Certificate will be issued for the period from January 1, 1781 until the time of his death. Also there is reference to the pay of Supernumerary Officers who apparently were paid by Colonel McCay with monies that are unaccounted for.

New York 6th May 1786

Dr. Sir,

Agreeable to your request of the 24th ulto. I have examined the rolls of the late 12 Regiment wherein James Wilson appears the 1 February 1777, and is mustered in 3d Reg, deserted Jany. 20, 1780. — how long he continued as a Deserter I am unable to inform you but have reason to believe he did not join the regiment in the year 1780; as he is not on the returns for 5 months pay — the pay from -

the first of January to the day of the death is made up and a Certificate issued to the Agents —

Inclosed is a return of the Supernumerary Officers of the late 8th. Regiment of Penna. altho there are no charges in the books of the Pay Office against those Gentlemen, yet I am led to believe that they received money from Col. McCay for the recruiting service, as that Gentleman is charges with the monies for that purpose which are unaccounted for —
I am &c
J. Howell Jur.

Jno. Nicholson Esqr.
