Letter addressed to General Knox dated 3rd Jany (undecipherable)
I am honoured with yours of the 24 instant - since the receipt of your letter of 9th November (undecipherable) to every (undecipherable) has then been made to comply with its requisitions - My accounts employed my first attention - They are ready to be rendered to the 1 instant which will be immediately done - Mr Boyer was discharged and paid of to that period - The situation of the (undecipherable) next came in mind - All the shot and shells at the ordnance yard have been removed and neatly piled in the shot stores at 6am - Pington - All the ordnance and (undecipherable) Carriages 24 Decem (undecipherable) for free the service are also stored - Those unfit were turned and the iron carefully preserved - The magazine of fixed ammunition has been examined and turned for this service I kept Mr Marner until their day on which he is discharged and paid - only Mr Knox remains with me making up the accounts
accounts of the deputies which I hope to effect in all other quarter, he will then be discharged. I have settled and paid Capt Price in full to the 1 of Oct last - Cap Briant's accounts are made out and (undecipherable) aided to him for the same time they also will be soon adjusted - Cap (undecipherable) are in hand, Cap Irish is gone on to Virginia to put a finishing hand to his - When he returns his will be also adjusted - having public money on hand sufficient to close all accounts on which I had made advances. I thought it unnecessary to apply to you - especially since the small sum I received from you is not all expended - every matter in the department not provided for before has been charged to your account, and will shortly be rendered, as I wish to make quarterly settlements with you in future - On the whole I have done every thing in my power to comply with your wishes, and have so far succeeded as to bring all expenditures under you immediate instruction.
inspection since the (undecipherable) of the present month, from which time all rents, and salaries as will or other expenditures will be estimated - this I hope will meet your appreciation - I wish to know what directions you have given for closing Major Johnson's accounts for shot and shells, as I cannot render an account of the advances made them until I know that in some way settlement is effected with (undecipherable) - I mentioned to you a number of new muskets which I knew of for sale, at a low price - you may remember you requested me to ascertain their kind and price, I have done it, and now enclose the note and I have received on the subject, which fully explains the matter, I shall therefore wait your further orders relative to them - and all other matters committed to my trust.
I am Sir
With great respect and esteem
your most obedient servant
James Hodgdon
