War Office Octr. 3d. 1785
Particular Orders to detach
Capt. Hamtramck's company
their Route &c
War Office October 3d 1785
Sir
The public interest and the good of the troops
require that captain Hamtramck's company should march
and assume a position on the Ohio previous to the setting in of the
inclement season.
It is me earnest desire that he should begin his march
by the 10th instant but as he has no officer with him and you having
given me some hopes that you may be able to add at least one
more to him, you will delay his march a few days for that purpose
should you find it essentially necessary. If however you should
not be able to give him another officer from the quota of this state,
I have authorized Major North the inspector to add an officer
from the quota of Connecticut and as many men from that state
as shall be requisite to complete the company
Mr. Duer will supply captain Hamtramck with
provisions on his route from West Point to Fort Pitt; he will also
furnish four two horse waggons for the transportation of his baggage
if a full company should march. if not means in proportion
in addition to which Mr. Duer will enable his agent who shall
accompany captain Hamtramck to pay the contingencies which
shall necessarily arise on the route such as ferriages fuel & Straw
The route of this company will be from West Point to
New Windsor from thence by Sussex court house to Easton on the
Delaware - Reading - from thence through Lebanon to Harristerry
Carlisle Shippensburgh the old forts Loudoun Bedford &
Ligonier
You will instruct captain Hamtramck to observe the most
perfect discipline on his march
If Lieutenant colonel Harmar should have returned to
Philadelphia he will probably have left particular orders
for captain Hamtramck at Fort Pitt or Fort McIntosh
which must be obeyed: but if this should not be the case
and there should not be any officer superior to captain
Hamtramck at Fort Pitt or Fort McIntosh or such other place on the
Ohio as shall most conduce the public service
I have drawn a warrant on the Paymaster general for
