Sir
In order to know what consideration is to be had
for the Losses or neglects of Mr Witmore; whose Letter is commended,
the Committee wish to know what has been the Amot of
his Salary & allowances daily or monthly. Did he draw
any Commission or Simply receive a Salary. Is the whole
of that Salary paid or does he take Certificates for Parts
if any, for what Proportion? As many claims are made
for money lost, It is necessary that the propriety of admitting
them should be well considered.
The Report of the Committee is now before Congress
on the Case of your differences in opinion from Gnl Hazen
but as the Amot of it is that you "have faithfully attended
to your duty" the Report will hardly be call'd for in haste
especially as Siveral very important matters which re-
quire the attention of nine States are now pending before
Congress.
