Description
Native of France. Fought in American Revolution.Granted a position on Washington's staff in June, 1777. Aide de camp to Lafayette. Lost arm during the retreat from Rhode Island in the fall, 1778. In 1784, returned to France, Led his regiment in suppression of slave uprising during Haitian Revolution. Taken prisoner by Haitian forces in 1794. Escaped to United States. Secured commission as Major of the 2nd Artillery, and helped plan and supervise the construction of fortifications at Fort Mifflin, Pa., and West Point, N.Y. He was instrumental in remolding the West Point garrison into a military academy.
