[Gen. P. Wilkinson to Capt. Nicholson, Nov. 6, 99, A] New York Nov^r 6^th 1799. My dear Sir Tomorrow I leave this place for Norfolk, where I embark for the Mississippi. I have been to the seat of Government & have urged your interests, but I find strong prejudices prevail on account of the capture which you made & the consequences which ensued — in the result my friend, it is not in my power to be to you a Messenger of Good news — & I have postponed writing to the last moment — the building of the 74 will not be hurried, unless urged by circumstances unexpected, I apprehend in the mean time you will hold your rank & Emoluments — be patient, be prudent, [undecipherable] your family in Maryland, & hope for a change favorable to you — Embrace your amiable Lady & Family for me, & believe me with affection sincerely Yours. signed Wilkinson Capt^r Nicholson —
