[293] [Hon.^ble Edward Livingston S. for] War Office 11^th April 1798 I have the Honor to transmit the two documents referred to in my Letter of the 2^nd Instant I am Sir y^r ob. Ser [His Excellency John Jay S.] War Department 18^th Ap^r 1798 Sir I have been honoured with your Excellency's two Letters dated the 7^th of April Inst. — Captain John Barry Commander of the Frigate United States has been directed to proceed to New york to examine the Cannon which you have been pleased to Signify you were ready to lend to the United States, upon an assurance from the President, that others of the like dimensions to [undecipherable] shall be returned — Should the Cannon be approved of by Cap.^t Barry I shall transmit you the assurance required by the Resolution of your Legislature — In the mean while I beg that you may give such orders as will enable Cap.^t Barry to make such examination of them as he may think necessary to ascertain their Effectiveness & fitness for the Service With very great respect I have the Honor to be Sir Y^r &c.
