New York^s March 18^th 1786 [left margin: Apr 18^th] Sir, Your letter of the 9^th Instant being come to hand & the accounts referred to in the same laid attended to by me, I am at a loss without further information what can be done to furnish that will do justice to the United States and not at the same time open a door for claims which may never cease. A Question naturally here occurs, why this demand was not made before, & how the soldiers leg is long continually deprived of their due. But in respect to the account itself, it appears to be a general settlement of the pay of your company from I supposed some after it was raised to the 15^th March 1781 when, I concluded it was disbanded. I comprehend also, some expences, and advances to recruiting Officers. on the first I have to observed that it appears most proper in order to properly comprehend every part of the claims, that the commanding Officer, that when [undecipherable] of the pay I doubting that the certificates by on Moses & Caldwell was said should be furnished, as also the Muster and such other original Papers as can be furnished procured.
