[March 18. 1786] [Copied] New York March 18^th 1786 Sir Your letter of the 9^th Instant being come to hand [with] the accounts referred to in the same [undecipherable] attended to by me— I am at a loss without further information what conduct to pursue that will do justice to the Individuals and not at the same time open a door for claims which may never cease. A Question naturally here occurs, why this demand was not made before, I leave the soldiers lay so long contentedly deprived of their dues But in respect to the account itself, it appears to be a general settlement of the pay of your company & other Allowances from I suppose soon after it was raised up to the 15^th March 1777 when, attention I conclude it was discharged. it comprehends also, some expences. and advances to recruiting Officers. on the first I have to observed that it appears to me proper in order to properly comprehend every part of the claims, that the commanding Officer that took charge of the pay & cloathing that the certificates from Muster & Caldwells accounts should be furnished. as also the Musters and such other original Papers as can be [strikethrough: furnished] procured.
