[Petition of Jonathan Ford Morris Read 15 June 1786 Referred to the Com^te of Army Aud^r to report] [undecipherable] [philadelphia 4 [undecipherable]] [No. 22] To the Honorable the Congress of the United States of America the subscriber begeth leave respectfully to shew That an acc^t hath been presented to your pay officer with a number of vouchers sufficient with his knowledge of the transactions to convince him that an acknowledgement is fully merited. Still there remains a difficulty without the particular instructions of this Honorable Body whose indulgence is craved while the case is justly stated The father of your petitioner was honored with a commission in the troops raised by New Jersey in 1775 for the protection of her liberties and continued active in his country's service untill the winter of 1778 when he died of a wound rec^d from British Troops leaving part of his pay rations and forage due as will appear from the testimonials handed in to your Pay Officer to whom your petitioner first applied for a settlement and was directed to call on the Auditor of New Jersey who sent him back again to your pay officer who still declines settlement untill instructed by your honors who it is humbly hoped will take the trouble to enquire into the propriety of the demands Altho small yet not of small importance to a needy person And direct your pay officer to grant a certificate therefor and your petitioner as is his duty will ever pray for the prosperity and happiness of your honor's Jonathan Ford Morris
