Sir, I observe in one of your Schedules an advance of pay for Lieut Peter Marks. I have to observe to you, that Lt Marks received [strikethrough: in the] 3^d day of June 1795 from Captain Edward Butler, 1773 dollars for the recruiting [service?]; his receipt has long since been forwarded by me to your Office; — on the 23^rd of November 1795 Ensign W.P. Smith refunded to me 230 dollars of [strikethrough: the above mentioned] money, for and on account of the [said?] Lt Marks, with which he stands Credited in my books. — he is still accountable for the balance of 1543 dollars. — and I presume [strikethrough: I cannot produce receipts for more than the] bounty of about twenty recruits. — I conceive it to be an object, to have this account settled. Captain Sedgwick has desired me to enclose his account to you (which I herewith send) and to remind you that he is in want of the money and wishes to have it settled. I am Sir Your ob^t Serv^t C.
