Removal from Office
Document 1801Mentioned obtaining pot ash, per Hodgdon's request. Brought up being removed from office to be replaced by "some favorite", Craig sought Gen. Irvine's opinion on matter. Craig believed Hodgdon acted a "dignified part" in surrendering his office.

Philada Pittsburg 17 April 1801 Dear Sa Your letter of the [undecipherable] is received [undecipherable] time a letter from your [undecipherable] Office requesing a Return of all the property of the United States on [undecipherable] charge I shall endeavor to improve your [undecipherable] with respect to Pot ash I presume I may infer from the Genl change you suppose will shortly take place, that I shall have equal liberty with you I have this day requested Genl [undecipherable] to give me his opinion on this point, Same time suggesting to him that I look for a removal to make room for some favorite - I shall mention to Capt Turner what you say respecting him - he seems much disposed to resign and go into Mercantile business - I had no doubt of your acting a dignified part at the surrendering of your Office - The QMG is not yet returned, but shortly expected.
