Spring field Quincy March 23 1801 Dear Sir I left Washington on the 4^th Descended at Springfield on the 8^th having battled the huge five hundred miles. I found about an hundred loads of corn used as any barn goods, & recollecting Horaces' "Est genus virtutis minervae adore aliquid" I thought I had made a good exchange, if Wolcott is an enthusiast in this case, which I dont believe; of horse bounties for manures. I have communicated their effects to my inquiries of Fennies on some other pamphlet. Low buy conifer expense good. But let us stop a words — I shall not however rest entirely to take the measures recommended by Fennies. The 8^th & 9^th odes of the second book of Horace have much good matter applicable to one. If you will read them, they will save me the trouble of writing. Dignity ceeding much, which I ought to commit to perform concerning myself. All is still as ought in this regions.
