The Hon^ble February 20. 1801 Jonas Platt Chairman of the Committee of Revisal and unfinished business — Sir I had the honor to receive your note of yesterday and agreeably to your request furnish inclosed a Statement of the number of Clerks employed in this Office and the Salaries heretofore allowed to each — On the Subject of an increase of compensation I have to observe that the Clerks who have removed from Philadelphia to this place with their families must necessarily incur much additional expence to what they did when in Philad' And it appears to me reasonable that an increase of compensation should take place — It may be necessary further to observe that the business of this Office is such as to require men of the first Talents as Accountants and that should those now employed from any cause be obliged to leave their Situations it would be difficult to fill their places to equal advantage — Sam &c W.S. --- A List of the Clerks employed in the Office of the Accountant of the War Department & of the Salaries annexed to each — 1 Principal Clerk . . . @ 1200 p ann' . . .
