Sir Last evening I received your letter of the 28^th ultimo enclosing your quarterly Return to the end of the last year. The entries are made to your Account to the 1^st of Jan[uar]y 1800 since which I have received the first, second, fourth quarters of that year — The third has not come to hand. The Returns received being unaccompanied with vouchers may serve to shew the state of the business during the periods they embrace, but will not warrant entries being made in my books, these can only be made from approved vouchers. It is intimated to me that you have been in the habit of sending your vouchers to the War Office; if so there is little doubt of their having been consumed by the late fire. this I shall enquire into, in the mean time if you have duplicates you had better forward them, and in future you will send the vouchers to me with the Returns. If well secured they may come in a Waggon under the care of a [strikethrough: safe] driver, and thereby save an enormous [strikethrough: postage]. M^r. Erving sends the Documents to enable you to secure or receive the amount due him from M^r. Green. I have no doubt but you will do the best that can be done to meet his wishes.
