Your favor of the 30^th Ulto is this moment come to hand — with respect to the Clothing I was sensible that interfering with original Appropriations must necessarily occasion great confusion — and therefore represented to the Commandant my opinion of the Consequences. But his orders were positive — and have accordingly been obeyed — I shall however report to you the quantity sent to the several Posts together with the packages remaining whole & their original destination — But in breaking in upon original Appropriations — Clothing is not the only article — the General says from this Deposit he was determined — Military Stores of every Species, in such proportion as he may judge proper — Notwithstanding former appropriations — I mentioned the other day to the General; the manner in which my Claim of Compensation for Extra Services had been treated — On which he seemed astonished at the conduct of M^r McHenry and Simmons; and says as soon as he is called to the Seat of Government, he will advocate my Claim in such a manner as to be productive of Success — I however have still my doubts on the business — Pray have you any knowledge of this M^r Stockton, as it is probable he will be Secy of War I am very respectfully Sir & [signature]
