Sam^l Hodgdon Esq^r Philadelphia Pittsburgh 30 Jan 1799 Dear Sir, I have just received your favor of the [undecipherable] ult^o The Mistake you mention of three 12 pounders being sent more than were ordered — is certainly very extraordinary indeed. — An Expence of 400 dollars on transportation of these Guns has accrued, and Carriages for them are now in the hands of the Workmen. — By order of the General, I have been under a necessity of repacking such a quantity of the Clothing destined for the first & Second Reg^ts of Infantry, as to make out a complete Years Clothing for one Company of 3^d Reg^t at Fort Pickering & five Companies of same Reg^t at Fort Adams, together with Clothing for one Company Artillery at the latter post & a Small Detachment at the former — By this you will see that the Clothing destined for the North Western posts, is appropriated to other purposes — Capt. Guion takes charge of this Clothing, together with other Stores destined for the Mississippi on board of two large Boats which are loaded and will I expect set off to morrow morning — By Capt Guion I shall send the boxes addressed to the Register of the Land Office in the N. Western territory — These boxes, came to hand the day before yesterday — together with a considerable quantity of Military Stores &c — The nomination of M^r Stockton as Secretary of War, is [undecipherable] [Ja]nuary — I hope the Senate may not concur in it — I am &c [signature]
