Sir Your letter of the 24^th July last came duly to hand and why it has remained so long unattended to I am really at a loss to say. I shall now reply thereto. I cannot give you any advice on the subject of Coll^o W^m Campbell's Claim as I do not remember of having seen the papers. On the subject of the money remaining in your hands, and compensation for your extra services I have to observe that if you did not understand the allowance made on the General settlement as embracing the collection of these monies - that you will in a statement of the monies since received make such charges as you deem proper, and the subject shall be referred to the Secretary of War for his decision when the account is forwarded. As the accounts will continue to remain open until yours are adjusted - I have to request that they may be closed as early as convenient - and such other monies as remain uncollected you will use your endeavours in collecting so as finally to close the transactions.
