Extension of Functions of Quartermaster General
Document 1801Discusses disbanding of additional army and necessity of Deputy Quarter Master General and assistant and Deputy Pay Master General continuing to exercise their functions. As for Odgen's compensation, he should be paid according to allowances, including pay in the line and office rent.
Copy of a Letter from Gen. Hamilton to Col Ogden - Date Jan 13. [undecipherable] & received on the 15th of the same month Colonel Aaron Ogden Elizabeth Town New Jersey New York Jan 13th. 1801 Dear Sir, I well remember, that about the period of the disbanding of the additional army, you consulted me about the necessity and propriety of the Deputy Quarter Master General with his assistant and the Deputy Pay Master General continuing to exercise their functions after the disbandment, for a reasonable period, with a view to winding up the transactions and the accounts of the respective departments, and that agreeing in opinion with you as both as to the necessity and propriety of the thing, it had my approbation and sanction. The public doubtless must have derived from it advantages which will overballance the compensations and incidental expenses of the arrangement. As to your compensation for this extra period it seems to be reasonable that you should enjoy the emoluments allowed you by Law deducting your pay in the line and that you should be creditted for office-rent and other incidents usual before the epoch of the disbandment. With great esteem & regard [undecipherable] A Hamilton Aaron Ogden Esq
