December 31^st 1800 Sir Your accounts & receipts for expenditures in July & August last on account of the fortifications at Marblehead have been examined, and the sum of two hundred fifty nine dollars & 75/100 passed to your credit on the Books of this Office - leaving a balance of seven hundred forty eight dollars & 22/100, due from you to the United States - which differs from your statement six dollars & 88/100 being the amount of the two enclosed bills which are returned to you for the purpose of having them receipted, when they will be admitted to your credit on settlement of your next accounts. They have been reported upon & the amount will be remitted in the usual way. The account of disbursements you mention will lay over until those for the last quarter are received — Sam &c [initials] "The Hon^ble January 3^d 1801. — Davis in Congress" Sir The claims for Militia services of W^m Ray & John Followell on the expedition in 1794, commanded by Gen^l Scott I have the honor to return herewith, and to inform you, that from the remarks on the Muster Rolls, it appears that no service was rendered by either of those persons. The certificates therefore cannot substantiate the claims. The Muster Roles in such cases being the authority on which claims are adjusted. I have noted the remarks of the Muster Master on each claim — & am very respectfully &c M.S.
