Wylie Pope Esqr December 10th 1800
Wilkes Co Georgia
Sir
Your letter dated the 25th October was this day handed to me by Colo Taliaferro, together with a Statement of your Pay as Pay master to the Militia in Georgia. When I wrote you on the 24 february last in reply to your letter of the 24th January & Stated to you the balance found due on a statement of your accounts, a copy of which I then inclosed to you — I presumed that on receipt thereof, you would immediately have forwarded to this Office all your accounts & vouchers, that they might be examined, & closed — (I likewise mentioned to you that your pay would be adjusted on settlement of your accounts) — As the accounts have not however been forwarded I have to call your attention to that object, & request that you will forward a statement of your transactions as Pay master (subsequent to the statement I forwarded to you) and the vouchers you have taken — that I may be enabled immediately to settle & close your accounts. A list of the Sums remaining unpaid you will furnish with the Statement and refer all claimants to this office for future payments —
It would be incurring an unnecessary expence to appoint an Agent specially to examine your accounts when they can so readily be conveyed to this Office by Post, and it will likewise occur to you how unnecessary it would be to continue an Officer so great a length of time in Pay for the purpose of Paying Troops a long time since disch'd & who you state to be in so dispersed a situation as to make it impracticable to close the payments within a considerable time — You will therefore be pleased to understand that tho' the payments on the Rolls may not be completed, they are notwithstanding to be forwarded with all your accots and you are requested to attend particularly to that part of my letter of the 24 February last relating to the want of Receipt Rolls for the sum of $13727.89. charged by you in your account Current, and for which Roles have not been received at this Office — The decision relative to your pay notified to you in my aforesaid letter is still adhered to —
Saml [undecipherable]
