The account was in the usual form referred to Physicians to report thereon, and they have allowed only one hundred & seventy two dollars 17/100 which sum will be remitted to the Cashier of the Bank United States, by the Treasurer from this place. December 8^th 1800 Sir The account of Cap^t Campbell Smith for expences of a court martial sitting at Philadelphia has been adjusted, and a balance of two hundred & eight dollars 92/100, found due from him to the U.S. which sum you are requested to deduct from his Acc^t of Pay &c. on first settlement, & furnish a certificate accordingly. The hurry occasioned by the late destruction of the War Office, has unavoidably impeded the Settlement of those acc^ts. I can only assure you that they shall be adjusted as soon as circumstances will permit, and being persuaded of your solicitude on the occasion, I shall take much pleasure in communicating the result to you as early as possible.
