[314] Amount of monies recd by Major Dradley From the Officers accounts to ascertain furnished the Pay master General 27 Nov 1789 — 100 — this sum reced at Athens for discounting bond 27^th 310 — Oct 1800 — In addition to the above Major Bradley has recd 300 dollars for contingencies from this Dept of the War Dept on Draught which will be accounted for at this Office — Cap^t John Sharp Accountants Office Portland M^o December 11 1800 Sir I have reced your letter under the 22^d ulto inclosing receipts for forage hire. The Regulations for allowing extra compensation to officers detailed on special services for their expired Stipulate that such officer so detailed shall to present a return for sums claimed and forth thereon. To establish a claim under these Regulations it was to enquiry that the order of the commanding officer who directed the service, who preferred, should accompany the account; they have never actually paid by an officer for primary only in addition to what already is admitted by the Secretary of War, but it is understood that the rule is to be literally applied to an case only where officers are detained on Public service which oblige them to incur expenses on the Reld and at places where there are no military Posts.
